Back in April 2018, I was approached by Elaine Lewis Designs to develop some murals for the New St Peter’s Hospice in Brentry, Bristol. We had previously met whilst collaborating on designs for the new Y Bwthyn NGS Macmillan Specialist Palliative Care Unit in Wales.

The interior design scheme by Elaine Lewis Design was already in process for St Peter’s Hospice, and included a gorgeous palette to be inspired by. 

St Peter’s Hospice sits within a lovely expansive garden which is surrounded by well-established Scottish Pine trees. This was the initial inspiration for my designs. From the research I carried out, it was clear the garden was a very important aspect of the Hospice and in fine weather it is frequently visited by staff and patients alike. The way in which KKE Architects have designed the new hospice fully embraces the lifestyle concept of ‘bringing the outside in’.

When developing initial design ideas for St Peter’s Hospice, my aim was not to compete with the new interior fabrics and finishes scheme, but to complement them: to create a holistic environment that promotes a sense of calm. In consultation with Elaine Lewis, we decided that for the patient entrance and the entrance to the social hub, the focus should be calming landscapes that incorporated the distinctive surrounding trees. In the Day Hospice the mural was to mimic the feeling of the new Winter Garden currently being planted by leading garden designer Olivia Kirk.

In addition, a firm favourite of many who visit St Peter’s Hospice is the heron mural in the children’s corner of the social hub, which I designed myself. The heron sits happily on the edge of a lake watching over the children who play there.

On completion of the new St Peter’s Hospice I was extremely pleased with the murals printed by Vescom and so proud to be part of this extremely worthwhile and very stylish project.
