Jane Colquhoun

Jane Colquhoun is an embroiderer and mixed media artist. Much of her inspiration currently comes from the patterns made by configurations of figures in the environment. The resulting small, detailed embroideries are worked with free motion machine embroidery onto canvas. Like most people nowadays, images of everyday life might be framed through the lens of a mobile phone, that snapshot moment of inspiration collected, and stored with little consideration. Jane recognises this impulse to collect and gather as a thread that runs through much of her creative life, and forms the basis for her embroideries and mixed media work. Sometimes a scrap of fabric or found object will inform the direction of a piece, just like a phone snap or screenshot inspires the embroideries.

Jane is part of the artist led co-operative Boilerhouse Gallery in Corfe Castle, Dorset, she exhibits widely in the South-West, and has work in collections in the UK and abroad. She trained in Dorset and London, where she taught art for many years before moving back to Dorset and continuing with her creative career. She is a member of Making Dorset and Society of Designer Craftsmen.
