A Visible THREAD, Collaboration

Collaborative artists’ book:

Quite a few of the seam artists each made a page for a collaborative textiles book, using their chosen materials and processes. This was exhibited as a touchable book at our final iteration of A Visible THREAD at Thelma Hulbert Gallery.

Glorious edges!

Some of the idiosyncratic, individual pages from the collaborative artists’ book. Can you tell who has made which page?

Naturally dyed and stitched cloth books:

Several seam members worked together over two days to dye and stitch pages for a number of cloth books which we sold as kits with a selction of coordinating threads:

On the first day of collaborative making, our resident expert natural dyer, Helen MacRitchie worked with Penny Wheeler, Nicola Turner, Julie Heaton, Jane Colquhoun, Leah Hislop and Joy Merron dyeing a range of fabrics using a number of techniques. Many thanks to Bath Spa University for allowing seam to use their facilities at Sion Hill.

Day 2 was a collaborative day of stitching the dyed cloth into pages which then can be cleverly attached to make a looseleaf book. The seam members involved today were again led ably by Helen MacRitchie and included Lydia Needle as well as some of the dyers – Penny Wheeler, Joy Merron, Jane Colquhoun and Nicola Turner. Thanks to Nicola for letting the group use the fabulous space in FormICA studio in Bath.

And here are the final books, ready to be made into kits to sell alongside the A Visible THREAD exhibitions at Llantarnam Grange and Thelma Hulbert Gallery.
